Biodiversity Brief — CO

Outlook: Deteriorating

Colombia ranks among the world's most biodiverse countries, hosting ecosystems from the Amazon rainforest to Caribbean coral reefs, Andean páramos, and Pacific coastal forests. The country encompasses portions of two biodiversity hotspots: the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena and Tropical Andes regions. However, IUCN Red List 2025 data reveals an alarming situation with all 64 assessed species classified as critically endangered, representing a 100% threat rate across mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, other invertebrates, and crustaceans. Colombia's biodiversity faces severe pressure from deforestation driven by coca cultivation, cattle ranching, and palm oil expansion, particularly in the Amazon and Chocó regions. The ongoing internal conflict has historically limited conservation access to remote areas, while illegal mining contaminates watersheds in the Magdalena and Cauca river basins. Climate change threatens high-altitude páramo ecosystems and coral reefs in the Caribbean. Post-peace agreement opportunities have emerged for conservation in previously inaccessible areas, though implementation remains challenging. The government has established ambitious protected area targets and participates in international conservation initiatives. However, the universal critical endangerment status of assessed species suggests conservation efforts are insufficient to address the scale of threats. Immediate intervention is required to prevent widespread extinctions across Colombia's unique ecosystems.

Conservation Achievements

Colombia has made significant strides in expanding its protected area network, now covering over 15% of national territory through the National Natural Parks System. The country has established innovative conservation mechanisms including Payment for Ecosystem Services programs and has committed to zero net deforestation by 2030. Following the 2016 peace agreement, new opportunities have emerged for conservation in previously conflict-affected areas, leading to the creation of new protected areas and biological corridors. Colombia also participates in international initiatives like the Leticia Pact for Amazon conservation and has developed comprehensive biodiversity action plans, though implementation faces ongoing challenges from limited resources and competing land use pressures.
