SpeciesRadar is designed for use by researchers, students, educators, conservation practitioners, and the general public. This page describes how to use our data responsibly and how to cite SpeciesRadar in academic work.
Data Usage Policy
SpeciesRadar aggregates and presents data from publicly available authoritative sources. The underlying data is subject to the terms of the original data providers:
- IUCN Red List data is subject to IUCN Terms of Use. Commercial redistribution requires an IUCN data use agreement.
- GBIF data is available under GBIF data use terms. Individual datasets may carry CC0, CC BY, or CC BY-NC licences.
- National Red List data is reproduced from published government and institutional sources and should be cited to the originating authority.
SpeciesRadar's own derived content — including species profile descriptions, country biodiversity briefs, and analytical summaries — is available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence. You are free to share and adapt this content for any purpose, provided you give appropriate credit.

For Students
SpeciesRadar is free to use for coursework, dissertations, and student research. When referencing SpeciesRadar data in academic submissions:
- Include the date you accessed the data (species assessments are updated periodically)
- Cite both SpeciesRadar and the underlying IUCN or national red list source
- Note the IUCN assessment version (e.g., “Version 2025-1”) where applicable
- SpeciesRadar's descriptive content (CC BY 4.0) may be quoted with attribution
